Researchers at St. Mary's Hospital in London had been stumped how 10 British men had contracted a rare virus called human T-cell leukemia virus type 1.?? The men weren't intravenous drug users and hadn't had transfusions; none of them displayed any symptoms, but doctors had identified the virus through bloodwork.?? Dr. Divya Dhasmana, co-author of a study published March 13 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was eventually tipped off to the source of the infections when she saw scars on one of the men's back: The men participate in blood-shedding religious rituals, such as cutting or whipping themselves.??
The rituals the men reported include striking the forehead with a knife, then passing the knife to other men; or striking the back with a chain of blades.?? Dr. Dhasmana told the Associated Press that one infected man told her the blades were soaked in a bucket of antiseptic solution between uses, but that didn't prevent the virus' spread.?? "Our message is not 'Don't do it,'" said Dr. Dhasmana. "Our message is, 'If you do it, don't share equipment.'" [Associated Press, 3/13/2019]

Germany???s worst industrial scandal in recent memory arrived when auto companies fiddled with emissions tests to make diesel cars seem greener than they are. Now a new study suggests that electric cars touted as a diesel alternative also aren???t so great for the environment.xxxxxxx. Better to heed the report???s authors, who suggest allowing room for a range of possible auto technologies to blossom and compete.

IKEA Gives More Direction
We force undergraduates to take plenty of entry-level classes, but where???s the one on practical financial responsibility? How about a test on setting a budget? My concern extends to my classmates on the less quantitative side of campus, but even as a finance major, I could benefit from this sort of education. My coursework deals with hypothetical $100 million bond issues, but this doesn???t help me figure out how to negotiate my credit limit or how much of my income I should be comfortable spending on rent. If university education is going to saddle us with years of debt, can it at least come with an instruction manual? xxxxxxx

Medicare for All Isn???t What Europe Offers

Regina E. Herzlinger and Bacchus Barua overlook the indispensable participants: physicians and surgeons. What if your physician or surgeon can???t afford to keep you?

April 23, 2019 4:03 p.m. ET
Regina E. Herzlinger and Bacchus Barua???s ???Europe???s Alternative to Medicare For All??? (op-ed, April 17) overlooks the indispensable participants: physicians and surgeons. What if your physician or surgeon can???t afford to keep you? There are four parts to the physician keystone of the ???Medicare for all??? machine not reflected in any other country on earth: U.S. physicians purchase their own education, which is not subsidized by government; U.S. physicians bear the significant financial burden of complying with state and federal mandates; physicians practicing in the U.S. are personally exposed to a shameless and unrestrained legal tort industry; Medicare rates do not reimburse enough of the overhead for a U.S. physician to sustain his or her practice. Medicaid, the ready implementation mechanism for Medicare for all, reimburses even less.xxxxxxx
